The Russian army has approached the main stronghold of Ukrainian defense in Donbas. Can the Armed Forces of Ukraine hold back this push? Meduza’s military briefing

The Russian army’s summer offensive has produced its first significant results. Despite the slow pace of advance in early June, by the end of the month Russian forces had achieved important tactical goals on the main axis. They managed to advance toward the Kramatorsk and Sloviansk agglomeration from three sides at once. The city of Kostiantynivka, south of Kramatorsk, has almost been captured. The assault on the city of Lyman is underway. And the stubborn nature of the fighting does not promise the Russian Armed Forces a quick breakthrough to Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. To do that, they will need to conduct several more similar operations, each of which will take several months. Nevertheless, for now Ukrainian troops are managing only to slow the Russian offensive, not stop it.
