Today in Russia there are no official statistics that would reflect the real scale of the torture problem. Partly because of this, torture seems to many people like something very distant — something that concerns only criminals and terrorists. But among those who have to piece their lives back together again are all kinds of people.

▶️ Olga is a tender specialist. She suffered injuries to her cervical vertebrae after traffic police officers dragged her out of a car and pulled her along the asphalt.

▶️Yevgeny is a university lecturer. He was taken from an acquaintance’s birthday party straight to a police station and held there for two days, without being given food, water, or a place to sleep.

▶️Ilya dreamed of teaching his niece to skateboard. He died after being beaten in a police station because of a ruptured spleen.

The Committee Against Torture helps torture victims and their families free of charge: Olga’s surgery on her cervical vertebrae and work with a psychologist were paid for. Medications were purchased for Yevgeny and he received psychological support. And Ilya’s family received legal assistance for five years and eventually secured a conviction for the police officer responsible. All of this became possible only thanks to private donations from people.

🟧 How to support torture victims

June 26 is the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. To mark the occasion, the Committee Against Torture is launching its annual campaign — to take part, you simply need to make a donation of any amount containing the number 26 (for example, 260, 526, 1026, or 2026 rubles).

This year the goal of the campaign is to raise 2,600,000 rubles for three months of direct assistance to victims. This money will make it possible to pay for the work of doctors and psychologists, independent experts and lawyers, as well as attorneys.
